The answer is yes, as long as you go about it gradually and intelligently. Because not only is physical activity not contraindicated, but it can become a powerful lever for regaining comfort, regaining self-confidence… and feeling better.Today, we propose to address two main types of pain: headaches, especially migraines, and neck pain. These are two common disorders, sometimes disabling, but for which movement can be a real key.

Physical activity: much more than just exertion

When we talk about physical activity in this context, we are not talking about running a marathon or lifting weights at the gym. We are talking about targeted, adapted, progressive movements that will support your nervous, muscular and cardiovascular systems. These exercises are designed to help you regain lost functions, improve your tolerance to exertion and gradually reduce pain signals.

Note: this is not the same as “moving daily”. Being active in life (like a parent who manages a thousand things or a professional in a physical job) is a real expenditure of energy, but it is often disorganized, non-specific, and without a real goal of progression. Re-exposure to activity is built up step by step, with exercises chosen according to your situation.

Sport and neck pain: strengthening to relieve

If you suffer from neck pain, particularly if you spend a lot of time sitting or in front of a screen, the priority is often muscle strengthening. Why? Because a lack of tone in the neck, shoulder and back muscles can lead to overload, postural fatigue and increased pain.

Simple exercises, done correctly, can really make a difference: strengthening the deep neck muscles, activating the shoulder blades, working on standing posture, etc. These exercises should be done without pain, with a comfortable range of motion, and with measured progression.

Sport and migraines: move to breathe

For migraines and tension headaches, the strategy is slightly different. The focus is on gentle endurance exercises, such as brisk walking, swimming or low-intensity cycling. Why? Because these activities help to regulate the cardiovascular system, oxygenate the brain, and reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks in many patients.

Regular physical activity also acts as a natural stress regulator, a well-known factor in the triggering of headaches. It improves sleep quality and mood, and can even help make treatments more bearable.

A few rules for getting back into it

Here are some guidelines for resuming physical activity safely and, above all, without aggravating the pain:

Avoid reproducing exactly the initial pain. An exercise may be difficult, but it should not cause sharp or worrying pain.

No neurological symptoms should appear during the effort: no unusual tingling, dizziness or sensations of “electric shock”.

Mild discomfort should disappear quickly after the activity, in a few minutes or hours.

The movement must remain pleasant. If a posture or exercise seems uncomfortable or stressful, try something else.

And above all, don’t forget: regularity is more important than intensity. Two to three 20-minute sessions per week are already an excellent basis for progress.

And in the middle of a crisis?

A migraine or headache, as we know, can be extremely difficult to live with. Sometimes you just want to stop everything and lie down in the dark and wait for it to pass. It’s understandable. But in some cases, a few simple strategies can really help you get through it better:

Take your headache medication at the first sign of a headache. It works much better when taken early.

Stay as calm as possible. Stress activates the nervous system and can aggravate the attack.

Try a relaxation technique: deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation (Jacobson technique), listening to soft sounds, etc.

Move, a little, gently. A short walk in the fresh air, a little stretching in peace and quiet: these can sometimes do you good.

Of course, if you really need to rest, you should listen to your body. But systematically avoiding all movement or stimulation can also have a negative effect in the long term: it promotes hypersensitization of the nervous system, which becomes more reactive to pain.

Developing your own strategies

Everyone is different, and this is even more true when it comes to pain. What works for you may not work for someone else – and vice versa. It is therefore essential to explore, test and adapt.

Some find relief with a rosemary infusion before gentle yoga, others by applying an ice cube to the forehead while changing postures, and still others with a short session on a stationary bike or simple guided breathing.

The most important thing is to be curious, kind to yourself, and to gradually build up your personal “toolbox” to get through painful episodes with more serenity.

In conclusion

Managing pain – whether acute or chronic – is not just about medication. Your body, too, is an ally. By gently, gradually and systematically resuming physical activity, you can reduce the frequency of your pain, improve your quality of life and, above all, regain control over how you feel.

Whatever your starting level, whatever the mistakes of the past or prolonged breaks from exercise, what matters is the next step. And even if that step is a small one, it’s still an excellent start.

You are unique. So is your journey. Take the time to listen to yourself, to progress at your own pace, and above all… don’t give up. Every movement is a message to your body: “I take care of you, I trust you.” And that is already a very big step towards getting better.

When you suffer from persistent pain – whether it’s migraines or neck pain – one question often comes up: Can I (or should I) exercise despite the pain?
