The problem is not stress itself, but the way it takes hold and influences our health in the long term. And among the many effects it can have on the body, pain – and headaches in particular – play an important role.

Stress: ally or enemy?

Stress is not always negative. It actually exists in two forms:

Good stress, known as eustress, is the kind that pushes us to act, to surpass ourselves, to stay alert at important moments. It can help us achieve our goals and motivate us. It is a one-off, temporary, well-controlled stress.

Bad stress, or distress, is the kind that sets in, that tires and exhausts us and disrupts our daily lives. It is chronic stress, often linked to responsibilities, conflicts, or mental or emotional overload.

In the past, stress was used to react quickly in the face of immediate danger: fleeing from a predator, defending oneself. Today, the triggers are different: emails, deadlines, family concerns, lack of sleep, social networks… But our bodies still react as if we had to survive in the savannah. The result is that our system is too often on alert, which ends up having very real physical and mental repercussions.

What happens in your body when you are stressed

As soon as a situation is perceived as threatening, a cascade of reactions is triggered in the brain:

The prefrontal cortex (which analyzes the situation) sends out an alert.

The hypothalamus, the control center for physiological reactions, takes over.

It activates the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body for action.

In concrete terms, this causes:

An acceleration of the heart.

Faster breathing.

Temporary cessation of digestion (not a priority in case of danger).

Increased muscle tension.

An influx of blood to the muscles and brain.

In the short term, this is very useful. But when these reactions become a daily occurrence, it unbalances the normal functioning of our body. In the long run, this can lead to:

Chronic inflammation.

Cardiovascular disorders (hypertension, palpitations).

Digestive disorders.

A decrease in immune defenses.

Cognitive fatigue (memory loss, difficulty concentrating).

And that’s not all: the brain itself can be affected. Areas such as the hippocampus (memory, learning) or the amygdala (emotion management) become more vulnerable to prolonged stress.

Stress and pain: a vicious circle

The link between stress and pain, particularly headaches, is now well recognized. Chronic stress promotes the onset, frequency and intensity of pain. Here’s why:

It changes the permeability of the blood-brain barrier, which can trigger or aggravate certain migraines.

It alters the functioning of the pain regulation system, increasing sensitivity to stimuli that should not normally be painful.

It maintains persistent inflammation that makes tissues more reactive.

It disrupts sleep patterns, preventing the body from recovering properly.

And as is often the case, pain goes hand in hand with tension: cervical tension, jaw clenching, muscle stiffness… All physical manifestations that further amplify headaches or musculoskeletal pain.

But our body is not helpless. It also has a system that counteracts stress: the parasympathetic system, the system of rest, calm and recovery. The problem? We don’t activate it enough in our daily lives.

The keys to better managing your stress… and your pain

The good news is that it is possible to rebalance the system. There is no need to eliminate all stress – this is impossible and even counterproductive. The idea is rather to learn to manage it better, to strengthen the recovery phases, and to adopt habits that support the body. Here are some effective levers:

Practise relaxation

Simple techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness meditation, or gentle yoga help activate the parasympathetic system. A few minutes a day is enough to lower nervous tension.

Improve sleep quality

Regular, restful sleep is one of the best remedies for stress and pain. Try to stick to a set schedule, avoid screens in the evening, and create a calm, dark and cool environment in your bedroom.

Take care of your diet and your microbiota

A healthy gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating stress and inflammation. Favor fiber-rich foods, various fruits and vegetables, natural probiotics (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut) and limit ultra-processed foods.

Move regularly

Physical exercise, even moderate exercise, releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones that reduce both pain and feelings of stress. You don’t need to do intense exercise: a brisk 30-minute walk a day is already very beneficial.

Rethink your view of stress

How you feel also depends on how you perceive things. If you see every difficulty as a catastrophe, your body will react violently. If you see it as a challenge to be taken up, a learning experience, your response will be more measured. This change in perspective can transform your relationship with stress.

Get support if you need it

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective in learning to manage stress better, break out of negative thought patterns, and regain emotional balance. Don’t hesitate to talk to a professional if you feel overwhelmed.

In conclusion

Stress is a normal reaction, but it becomes problematic when it becomes long-lasting. It can then have a strong influence on your health, particularly if you suffer from headaches or chronic pain. The good news is that there are many ways to regain control: breathing, sleep, movement, diet, support, etc.

By better understanding what is happening in your body and adopting appropriate strategies, you can reduce your pain and improve your quality of life in a sustainable way. And if you don’t know where to start, talk to your physiotherapist: they are there to support you, not only with your muscles or joints, but also in the overall management of your health.

Stress is part of our lives.
