It tends to be perceived as something negative, something we should fear or suppress as quickly as possible. Yet, it’s essential to understand that inflammation is actually a normal and vital part of how our body protects and heals itself. When there’s an injury or a form of stress on the body—whether it’s a sprain, a cut, or internal tissue damage—the immune system reacts by triggering an inflammatory response. This response is complex and well-coordinated: blood vessels dilate to allow more white blood cells to reach the affected area, which helps eliminate damaged cells and begin the repair process. This mechanism, although sometimes uncomfortable, is both protective and restorative. It’s what causes the redness, swelling, heat, and pain that are commonly associated with inflammation. But rather than being a sign of worsening, these symptoms are indicators that your body is working, actively trying to heal.

You can think of inflammation like a house alarm. When it detects a break-in, it rings loudly—not to harm you, but to signal danger and summon help. When that alarm system works correctly, it’s incredibly useful. But if the alarm is triggered too often, too loudly, or without reason, it becomes a problem in itself. That’s exactly what happens when inflammation becomes chronic, excessive, or inappropriate. In some situations, the immune system starts to react when it doesn’t need to, or the process simply drags on without resolving. In these cases, inflammation may need to be addressed directly, but even then, it’s still the result of your body trying—albeit in an unbalanced way—to fix something.

It’s also important to remember that the body is equipped with incredible self-healing capacities. The terms we use in medicine—acute, subacute, chronic—are just ways of describing the timeline of inflammation, not necessarily its severity or danger. A flare-up doesn’t always mean that something has worsened permanently. Often, it’s just a temporary phase, a moment of increased sensitivity or reactivity that will eventually calm down.

A classic example of this process is what happens after a superficial burn. The area becomes inflamed, red, painful to the touch—and that’s not a sign of damage getting worse, but of the body concentrating its healing forces in that precise spot. Pain and sensitivity increase because the nervous system receives more information from the area, making us more alert to it. This is why two people can feel very differently in similar situations: some will be hypersensitive, others less so. It’s not about weakness or tolerance; it’s about how each person’s nervous system is wired to process that information.

Pain and inflammation, then, are not the same thing. Inflammation is a physiological process, while pain is the perception we have of it. During inflammation, the body releases molecules—called inflammatory mediators—that stimulate nerve endings and make them more sensitive. This helps the brain stay aware of what’s going on in the injured area and guides our behavior: we move differently, we protect the zone, we rest more. All of this, in the short term, supports healing. The system is not designed to hurt us; it’s designed to protect us.

This perspective is especially important when talking about conditions like migraines. A migraine is not “just a headache”—it’s a neurological disorder, and inflammation plays a central role in it as well. Specifically, migraines involve an inflammatory reaction inside the skull that affects the trigeminal nerve, one of the major nerves responsible for sensation in the face and head. When this nerve is activated, it sets off a cascade of reactions that lead to the throbbing, intense pain that many people with migraines know all too well. Part of what makes migraine pain so unique is that it’s both inflammatory and vascular in nature: blood vessels in the brain expand, pressure increases, and nerve endings get overstimulated. This leads to the sharp, pulsating pain that can be so difficult to bear.

What makes migraines particularly challenging is that they’re invisible. You can’t see them on a scan. Nothing shows up on an X-ray or MRI. From the outside, a person with a migraine looks normal—but inside, they may be experiencing pain that is intense enough to cause nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, and extreme sensitivity to light or sound. Because there are no visible signs, it’s a condition that’s often underestimated or misunderstood, yet its impact on quality of life is profound. Migraine can lead to missed workdays, social isolation, anxiety, sadness, and a deep sense of frustration.

Thankfully, we now know that there are effective treatments, especially when taken at the right time. The first-line medications for migraines are anti-inflammatory drugs. These work best when taken early—right at the start of an attack, ideally during the first signs or warning symptoms, known as the aura. Combining anti-inflammatories with a small dose of caffeine has been shown to enhance their effectiveness, shortening the duration and intensity of the migraine. On the other hand, paracetamol, while commonly used for general aches and pains, is much less effective against migraines and isn’t considered a recommended option. Timing, in the case of migraine treatment, is everything. The earlier you act, the more likely it is that you can interrupt the cascade of inflammatory and vascular events before the pain peaks.

Understanding these mechanisms—the purpose of inflammation, the role of the nervous system, the timing of treatment—can help us feel less helpless and more confident in managing our symptoms. Instead of fearing every flare-up or every migraine, we can begin to see them as signals, messages from the body that we can learn to interpret and respond to more effectively. Inflammation isn’t the enemy. It’s a sign that your body is alive, responsive, and doing its best to heal and protect you. When we work with it, instead of against it, we give ourselves the best chance at real, lasting recovery.

Inflammation is often misunderstood.
